Prof. Renato Renner - Testing quantum theory with thought experiments
Date: December 16, 2020 at 16:00pm (Israel time)
Abstract:
Experimental tests of quantum theory have so far been restricted to microscopic scales. Whether or not the theory accurately describes larger or more complex systems is thus still an open question. One approach towards answering it is to push the experimental frontiers and, for instance, test interference of heavy particles. This talk, however, is devoted to the theorist’s approach, which is based on thought experiments. Specifically, I will explain and discuss a recent thought experiment that is based on the following idea: If quantum theory was indeed valid universally, one may use it to describe systems that are themselves users of quantum theory. This leads to consistency requirements, which are not obviously fulfilled by the current theory.
