Our group works in the area of optical communications. Our main efforts are invested in the modeling of communication through a fiber optic channel, while emphasizing the effects of optical nonlinearity, polarization phenomena, and noise. Although most optical communications systems operate in the classical-optics regime, we resort to a quantum mechanical formulation in order to establish the fundamental limits of optical transmission. In addition, we are interested in fiber-optic implementation of quantum communication protocols, and in the use of the fiber-optic channel for demonstrating quantum phenomena.
